Name: Marie Kingsbury

After 25 years as the executive director of The Women’s Center, Inc (Waukesha) Marie retired in 2013. Prior to that she worked on issues of domestic violence and sexual assault/abuse in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan before she joined The Women’s Center in Waukesha in 1988. Her interest and passion for working with victims/survivors began when she was a volunteer crisis advocate for rape victims in the 1970’s. In 1979 she helped to open the first  domestic violence emergency shelter in Indianapolis, Indiana, her home town.

Almost all of Marie’s work life has been in the nonprofit sector. A couple of exceptions were as a newspaper reporter for the Chicago Trib and as corporate public relations associate.


College Experience

Marie graduated from Ball State university (Muncie, IN) with a double major in social work and journalism. She obtained her Master’s degree in Community Development at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale, IL).


Value of TEMPO

Marie joined TEMPO when it was  newly formed (She doesn’t recall the precise year). She says she has valued the opportunities TEMPO has provided to meet and interact with professional women in other sectors outside of the nonprofit sector. 

Marie loves art has been a volunteer at the Milwaukee Art Museum for more than ten years. She enjoys traveling, especially to countries very different from the US. Her next trip is Japan in April.

She and her husband (Leo Ries) live in Milwaukee and over the years have enjoyed opening their home to international guests and students from many countries, including India, Kazakhstan, France, Vietnam, Lithuania and Germany.
